Hardwood Floor Refinishing – Handy hints to make the job easier
Elegant and grand as the hardwood floors are,
maintenance and refinishing hardwood floors call for subtlety. The very
essence of a hardwood floor is its understated beauty; hence, hardwood
floor refinishing demands artistry and arduous involvement.
One of the popular hardwood flooring finishes is sanding the floor.
Sanding, wipes away every trace of attribute that the wooden flooring
has come to acquire over its extended period of use (or misuse). The
problem with the sanding process is that it generates a lot of dust. At
the same time, sanding leads to the thinning of hardwoods, which again
obliges you to replace the flooring.
A far more easier, economical and enduring solution is refurbishing or
chemical refinishing. Chemical refinish is known to restore a wooden
floor’s vintage look.
To commence with, you will need to mop the entire floor (either with
water or with a mild solution of Trisodium Phosphate). After the floor
has dried for a day or so, apply wax remover on it. On drying, the
defects of the floor will be more pronounced. At this stage, the stains
and off-colored portions will have to be treated
When all this is done, you will have to get down to the refinishing job.
For revamping, you need Lacquer Thinner, Denatured Alcohol, some
refinishing tools and a chemical-resistant pan.
Prepare a mixture of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol (in the ratio
of 1:1). Pour some of the mixture is the pan and start polishing the
floor by carefully applying the mixture moving with the length of the
hardwoods. (As you dip and re-dip the tool in the pan, the old finish of
the floor blends with the mixture in the pan and it becomes dark. If the
hardwood floor has undergone any repair, this dark concoction will
better blend these regions with the existing boards).
