Laminated flooring board is a high-performance, durable floor. It is a kind of tongue and groove interlocking flooring system that floats on top of the existing substrate. The substrate could be a new wood sub floor, an existing vinyl floor, a hardwood floor, a concrete slab or other existing flooring types. It is made from wood pulp, paper, and plastic. Laminate flooring plank consists of three basic components, which are core, wear-layer, and backer.

Core gives laminated flooring its strength and impact resistance but it is highly susceptible to moisture. The wear-layer consists multiple layers of Kraft paper. This resin-filled wear-layer is extremely resistant to stain, scratch or burn from a cigarette. On the bottom is a backer layer, which is also made from resin-impregnated Kraft paper.

Most of the laminated floors have a wood grain appearance. There are even some abstract designs coming to the market. The printed film technology can create an extremely realistic looking harmonic hardwood floor on any variety of laminated floors.

The type of traffic, a floor will be subjected to, is the main factor while choosing flooring material. The high-density backing boards in laminates resist gouges, scuffs and stains that fails to penetrate the high-pressure laminate coating. Sliding chairs or dropped pots have only little affect on laminates.

Laminate floors require very little maintenance. They do not require refinishing every alternate year. Routine cleaning with a vacuum cleaner is all that is needed. The material handles surface moisture well, but if the core material gets wet it can expand and damage the flooring. The process for repairing damaged boards is similar to that of hardwood. Precision cutting and fitting is required, so a professional should be consulted.

Cost of installing basic laminated hardwood flooring is around USD10 to USD13 per square foot. More exotic varieties of flooring have higher price ranges.
